Soapnut Berries and Ways to Use Them in Your Daily Life

soapnut berries (1)Soap nuts (or ‘soapnut berries’ as we affectionately call them at Craftiviti) have been around for centuries. It’s one of the oldest medicinal plants in the world which is native to India and Nepal, and is known by other names like ‘Indian soapberry’ and ‘washnut’.

Traditionally, these nuts are used as a natural remedy for many health problems and skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. It is hypoallergenic and has natural antibacterial, anti-fungal and insecticidal properties. Today, they’re a popular, natural, biodegradable and environment-friendly alternative to chemical detergents as the soap nut shells contain saponin, a surfactant which is released when the soap nuts are soaked in water.

Here’s some ways you can incorporate soap nut berries in your daily life:

1. Foaming Hand Wash

What You’ll Need

Instructions

  1. Add 30g of Soapnut Berries, 2g of Dried Rose Buds and 250ml of Distilled Water into a Glass Beaker.
  2. At low heat, bring the mixture into a simmer and then, remove it from the heat.
  3. With the help of a sieve and funnel, pour the liquid into the Clear Foam Dispenser Bottle.
  4. Using the measuring spoon, add 2ml of Glycerin to the liquid. Gently swirl the bottle to blend.
  5. Let the mixture cool before adding 2 drops of Tea Tree Ecocert Preservative. Again, gently swirl the bottle to blend the liquid inside.

2. General Cleaning

What You’ll Need

Instructions

  1. Add 25g of Soapbut Berries to 500ml of Water.
  2. Using low heat, bring the mixture into a simmer before removing it.
  3. Then, with the help of a sieve and funnel, pour the liquid into your choice on container.

*NOTE: Use this solution within 3 days as there’s no preservatives added. This can be used for household cleaning and for bathing and washing your hair!

3. For Laundry

What You’ll Need

Instructions

Add 15 pieces of Soapnut Berries (per 5kg of laundry) into a laundry net and place it together with your laundry in the washing machine.

*NOTES:
a)
15 pieces of Soapnut Berries is ideal for cold washes. If you’re using hot water, you can reduce the amount to a minimum of 4 pieces.
b) U
sing a laundry net is important! You don’t want to end up with crushed bits of Soapnut Berries in your clothes.
c)
You can reuse the Soapnut Berries for approximately 4 washes before their effectiveness is gone.
